God of War: Chains of Olympus places players in control of Kratos, the Ghost of Sparta, in a third-person action-adventure experience tightly adapted for the PSP. The story begins as Kratos defends the city of Attica against a Persian invasion and a massive basilisk. Soon after, the sun vanishes from the sky when Helios is abducted, allowing the dream god Morpheus to spread a sleep-inducing fog that weakens the Olympians. Athena tasks Kratos with retrieving Helios and restoring the light.
His journey takes him through the Temple of Helios, the caves of Olympus, Tartarus, and the underworld. Along the way he confronts Persephone, who schemes with the Titan Atlas and Morpheus to destroy the Pillar of the World and topple Olympus. Kratos must decide between personal redemption and saving the world of gods and men.
Gameplay emphasizes combo-based combat with the Blades of Chaos, new weapons such as the Gauntlet of Zeus and Sun Shield, and magical abilities including Efreet, Light of Dawn, and Charon’s Wrath. Players collect red orbs to upgrade weapons and magic, Gorgon Eyes to expand health, and Phoenix Feathers to increase magic capacity. Platforming, light puzzle-solving, underwater sections (enabled by Triton’s Lance), and brutal quick-time event finishers complete the classic God of War formula, delivered with near-console quality visuals and minimal loading on the handheld. The main campaign lasts approximately 6–8 hours.
