Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories places players in the role of Toni Cipriani, a loyal soldier of the Leone crime family who returns to Liberty City in 1998 after years in hiding. Working under Don Salvatore Leone and other contacts, Toni carries out a series of missions involving heists, assassinations, turf wars, and power struggles against rival families such as the Sindaccos and Forellis, as well as corrupt officials and other criminal elements.
The game is set in a recreated version of Liberty City from Grand Theft Auto III, consisting of three islands (Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale), with differences reflecting the earlier time period. Gameplay follows the classic GTA formula: players free-roam the open city, steal vehicles (including motorcycles for the first time in Liberty City), engage in combat, complete story missions, and pursue side activities such as taxi driving, vigilante work, street races, rampages, and collecting hidden packages. The PSP version includes local ad-hoc multiplayer for up to six players across several competitive modes.
A new game engine was developed specifically for the handheld, delivering solid performance, improved visuals for the platform, custom radio stations, and the ability to import personal music on the PSP. The story expands the lore of the 3D Universe while delivering the signature mix of satire, crime, and chaotic freedom that defines the series. Later ports brought the game to PlayStation 2 and mobile devices.
